There are many ways to network, and in today’s marketplace, it can be the most effective way to build your business. First of all, the best thing to do is not to see it as work and relax. Have you ever spoken to someone who made you nervous because all they can think about is how they can sell to you? Well, you need to be aware that you are not there to waste your time, so, speaking to as many people as you can in a group function is important, but, not at the expense of rushing away from everybody. In a one on one situation that was organised it is important to really engage in active listening. People are more interested in themselves than you, so, finding out more about them, tells more about you than just rattling off what you can do. Wait patiently until the other person asks you and if they don’t, guess what, they’re not interested in doing anything for you anyway.
Anyway, the most important thing to remember is that people usually buy from people they like and not necessarily from companies. You are the product of your business. Richard Branson’s image is what people buy when they choose Virgin. It’s funky and exhilirating to be associated with his brand. What kind of brand are you portraying when you meet people?
